The Literacy Council of Buncombe County teaches individuals basic reading, writing, math, and English language skills through individual and small group instruction by trained tutors. Students, young and old, gain self-confidence and develop self-sufficiency to transform their lives as individuals, parents/children, workers/students, and citizens. Success comes from the trusted bond that develops between our instructors and students. The Literacy Council, a non-profit organization accredited by ProLiteracy America and serving the community since 1987, provides highly individualized tutoring to fit the needs of over 300 students annually in three programs: Adult Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and the Augustine Project®. Bee in Harmony a music-themed Spelling Bee wit fifteen teams of three adults compete in the most spirited and outrageous word challenge of their lives. Host David Ostergaard, formerly of Lazoom, keeps the audience laughing.

Women Working for a cure Relay for Life team, will be having their 10th Annual Fashion Show & Luncheon on Saturday, April 26th 11:30 – 2:00 pm, at the Crowne PLaza Resort. This event is to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and all monies collected will be submitted to aide in research. All models are cancer survivors. NAMI Four Seasons began in 1984 and grew to include Henderson, Polk and Transylvania Counties. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) was started in 1974 and is organized at the local, state and national levels. Our affiliate members are volunteers who offer support, education and advocacy based on experience. Our goals are improving quality of life, resiliency and recovery. Our walk is called “NAMI Hikes in the Park.” Shelby Mood, Iraq and Afghanistan War Vet will speak about PTSD. Writer, Susan Reinhardt, (Author of Chimes from a Cracked Southern Belle) is also on the venue. Join us in support of the mentally ill.
